Your Performance Guide
Everything your family needs to feel prepared, organised and confident for a DFC performance.
Performances should feel exciting, not stressful. This guide keeps the important information Simple, Easy and Convenient.
Preparation Creates Confidence.
Performing is an important part of a dancer's journey. It gives students the opportunity to share what they have learned, experience the excitement of being part of a team and develop confidence in front of others.
Some students will be excited. Some will feel nervous. Many will feel a little bit of both.
The goal is to step forward, support the team, do your best and enjoy the experience. A forgotten step does not erase everything your child has achieved to get onto that performance floor.
Make the Day Simple.
Check the Event Information
Confirm the performance location, arrival time and any event-specific instructions sent to your family.
Prepare Clothing Early
Have the required DFC clothing, shoes and any event-specific items ready before the day.
Pack Water
Bring a clearly named water bottle so your child can stay hydrated before and after performing.
Allow Extra Time
Avoid rushing. Arriving calmly gives your child time to settle, find the group and prepare mentally.
Check the Event Instructions.
Performance clothing can vary depending on the event, so always follow the specific information sent for that performance.
Unless advised otherwise, families should make sure all required DFC clothing is clean, ready and clearly named.
- Required DFC shirt or performance clothing
- Black shorts, leggings or pants if requested
- Clean sneakers
- Long hair secured neatly away from the face
- No unnecessary jewellery or accessories
Do Not Guess
Different performances may have different requirements.
If an event message provides specific clothing, arrival or preparation instructions, those instructions take priority over this general guide.
If you are unsure, ask before performance day. That is much easier than discovering something is missing once the group is preparing to perform.
A Typical Performance Journey
Every event is slightly different, but the general experience usually follows a Simple flow.
Arrive
Find the DFC meeting point and check in.
Settle
Join the group and become comfortable in the environment.
Prepare
Review positioning, expectations and any final reminders.
Warm Up
Prepare the body and focus before performing.
Perform
Step out together, enjoy the music and give it your best.
Celebrate
Recognise the courage and effort it took to perform.
Three Ways You Can Help.
Stay Calm
Children often pick up on adult stress. A calm arrival and Simple reassurance can help your child feel much more settled.
Let the Teacher Lead
Once students are with the DFC group, allow Tanya to manage positioning, warm-up, choreography and performance preparation.
Celebrate Effort
Focus on courage, commitment and enjoyment rather than analysing every step immediately after the performance.
What If My Child Feels Nervous?
Feeling nervous before performing is normal. It does not automatically mean your child does not want to perform or that something is wrong.
Performing asks children to step outside their usual comfort zone. That is part of what makes the experience so valuable.
Keep reassurance calm and Simple. Remind them that they do not have to be perfect, they are performing with their team, and the goal is simply to give it a go.
If your child is especially worried, speak with Tanya before the performance rather than trying to solve everything in the final few minutes.
Celebrate the Experience.
Performing takes confidence and courage. Even when something does not go exactly to plan, getting onto the performance floor is an achievement.
Instead of beginning with what went wrong, help your child recognise what they experienced and achieved.
Parents Often Ask...
What time should we arrive?
What should my child wear?
What if my child forgets the choreography?
What if my child is nervous on the day?
Can I give my child choreography corrections before they perform?
What happens if performance details change?
